Pablo Trapero was born in San Justo, Argentina, and studied filmmaking at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. He made his feature debut with the award-winning Crane World (1999). His other feature films include Rolling Family (2004), Born and Bred (2006), Carancho (2010) and White Elephant (2012).

White Elephant explores one of Buenos Aires’ most dangerous corners: Villa Maria, a shantytown overrun by narcotics dealers and corrupt police. Its inhabitants have been taken under the wing of two Catholic priests who place themselves in mortal danger in order to bring food, education, medicine, and employment to this imperiled community.
