Petra Costa was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She began acting at fifteen. She studied anthropology and theatre at New York’s Columbia University and received her degree in community and development at the London School of Economics. Her short film Undertow Eyes (2009) won several awards. Elena (2013) is her feature debut.
